I applaud Sen. Jon Tester for supporting economic development through use of renewable resources. Given the long-term negative consequences of fossil fuel extraction, it makes no sense not to look to renewable energy. The contest is not between jobs and the environment. It is between the illusory “boom” and subsequent bust of a fossi-l fuel-based economy and true, sustainable prosperity.
In his Nov. 15 column, Tester also addressed claims that energy prices are rising because of wind development: “Under Montana’s renewable-energy standard, Northwestern Energy doesn’t even have to buy wind power if it’s more expensive than the average of their other sources.” Many profess a healthy skepticism about government but naively succumb to energy industry propaganda. In fact, with deregulation, profit-making institutions will necessarily use any cover to increase earnings, even at the expense of consumers. Thanks to Tester for pointing this out.
