Eastern Montana drought teaches us to protect our sacred waters

August 9, 2017
This blog ran as the Chair's Column in the Summer 2017 Plains Truth, the voice of the Northern Plains Resource council. The drought in eastern Montana this summer reminds us, yet again, that ranchers and farmers depend on clean, reliable water sources for their livelihoods. This summer, I’ve visited with producers in Dawson, Garfield, Fergus, Petroleum, and Phillips counties; and our conversations never stray far from this latest drought. When people aren’t racing...

Legislative Scorecard: Knudsen fried our bacon, Governor saved it

May 30, 2017
The 65th Montana Legislature is in the books and we all survived. The tragic comedy that is the Montana Legislature was filled with highs, lows, embarrassments, and downright awkward moments. Once again, Northern Plains and our members worked tirelessly to defeat the detrimental and irrational policies that were brought forward by a segment of our state’s legislators, but the biggest hurdle throughout the session were the highhanded parliamentary tricks by the Speaker of the...

Rural Montana needs PACE

April 7, 2017
In Montana’s small towns and rural areas, there are many old buildings and homes in need of upkeep and renovation. If you’ve ever driven down Main Street, no matter what the town, you know what I mean. My husband, son, and I operate a ranch outside Bridger, Montana, as well as a motel in town. In this small town of less than 1,000 people, many of the buildings are close to 100 years old. Our motel was built in the...

Enable PACE for economic development, energy conservation

February 10, 2017
If you're interested in supporting PACE or other clean energy legislation at the Montana legislature, please get in touch with Alicia at 406-248-1154 or via alicia@northernplains.org. Northern Plains has a Clean Energy Lobby Day coming up next week and is also always interested in helping people testify at bill hearings throughout the legislative session. This winter, many of Montana’s families and businesses are facing high utility bills resulting from old or inefficient homes and buildings that are in need of...

Northern Plains: Now more than ever

January 23, 2017
Northern Plains: Now more than ever I’ve spent the past several months in a period of reflection. And when I first started thinking about this post, it was going to be a recitation of our myriad wins this last year. But then the election happened, and people got bummed. Like, really bummed. I saw a glimmer of hope this last weekend shine through at the Montana Women’s March though. Nearly 10,000 people marched...

Representative Zinke should embrace stewardship at Interior

January 13, 2017
Note: The U.S. Senate Committee on Energy and Natural Resources has set a Tuesday, Jan. 17, confirmation hearing for Rep. Ryan Zinke, R-Mont., to be Secretary of the Interior. His nomination must be confirmed by the full Senate.  Rep. Ryan Zinke, R-Montana Secretaries of the Interior are called to be public stewards. On behalf of all Americans, they oversee our great national heritage of forests, grasslands, fisheries, national parks, wildlife, waterways, and mineral wealth.  Congressman Ryan Zinke, if approved for his nomination...

Standing up, speaking out, and fighting for things we love

December 29, 2016
In today's uncertain political climate, many of us are thinking about how we can truly make a difference for our communities. As a long-time member of the Northern Plains Resource Council I've been fortunate to witness the many ways in which Montanans can affect how things turn out – standing up, speaking out, and fighting for the things they love about Montana. While I may not always be able to participate at this level, I can rest assured that there’s...

Home on the Range sets the bar high

June 30, 2016
On Saturday, June 25, we celebrated the culmination of a lot of hard work by Northern Plains and Western Organization of Resource Councils members and staff as well as local design and construction professionals. We marked the 10-year anniversary of our move into our own building (called Home on the Range, or HOTR) with the addition of a new carport solar panel array. That means our building now produces 100% of the power it uses renewably and on-site. From the...

Colstrip plants wearing out anyway; bet on wind

March 14, 2016
Colstrip is in a unique position to serve as a beginning project for "all of the above" electrical generation. Over 40 years ago, construction began on the Colstrip 1 and 2 generating facilities. When the permitting hearings were held in January 1974 under the Major Facility Siting Act, Montana Power indicated after much questioning that the plants would only have an operating life of 30 years, as coal-fired generating plants do not have an indefinite lifespan. The units at Colstrip...
